Fani-kayode Still In Custody For Fresh Allegation – EFCC - Politics Nigeria

Ade Adesomoju, Abuja

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission said on Thursday that it was investigating the spokesperson of the Peoples Democratic Party’s Presidential Campaign Organization for the 2015 election, Mr. Femi Fani-Kayode, for fresh allegation.

The anti-agency said the fresh allegation was different from the case of the N800m which the former Minister of Aviation allegedly received as campaign fund from the $2.1bn meant for procurement of arms.

It said this on Thursday before a High Court of the Federal High Court in Apo, Abuja, where it also disclosed that fresh petition received against the former minister by its Special Task Force in its Lagos office was what prompted it to move him from Abuja to Lagos.

Counsel for the EFCC, Mr. Salisu Majidadi, appeared before Justice Olukayode Adeniyi, on behalf of the commission to oppose a fundamental human rights enforcement suit filed by Fani-Kayode, seeking an order releasing from the custody of the anti-graft agency.

But Fani-Kayode’s lawyer, Chief Ifedayo Adedipe (SAN), who earlier argued his client’s suit, insisted that the commission having failed to present the fresh petition as exhibit before the court, showed there was no proof that there was any ongoing investigation of his client.

The judge after hearing both sides on Thursday fixed June 29 for judgment in the suit.

MUST READ: 7 THINGS YOU SHOULD BE TELLING YOUR WOMAN OTHER THAN ‘I LOVE YOU’

i love u
A relationship can sometimes be filled with certain vicissitudes and would need serious levelheadedness to maintain. These are tips to keep your love alive.
While saying “I love you” is essential, so are other phrases, each with their own positive ripple effects in your relationship.
Here are seven things ladies want to hear more than “I love you.”
1. “You can do it.”
Perhaps one of the most important roles a partner plays in our lives is cheerleader. So, go on, tell her she can achieve more than she think.
2. “I’m proud of you.”
When you finish that last bite of a healthy salad instead of your usual doughnut or kick b*tt at your work project, the best thing your man can do is swell with pride and express just how he thinks you rock. Knowing you impressed yourself is great in-and-of itself—but blowing his mind is a new level of awesome.

i love u

3. “You’re beautiful.”
There’s nothing like the feeling a lady get when a man she loves drops this line as she wakes up, with unwashed mascara smudged along her puffy eyes—and knowing he means it.
4. “I appreciate you”
A man can turn the mundane into something more when he recognizes her acts of service are acts of love. Example include arranging his clothes in the wardrobe when he leaves them scattered all over the floor.
5. “Let me take you on a date.”
Routine is the silent killer of passion, people. So when a man wants to break free of binge-watching Netflix and take you out for a night on the town—or even for a candlelit, home-cooked meal out of the home —he’s saying he wants to keep the spark alive and roaring.
6. “I support you.”
If a man’s got a lady’s back, it’s akin to having the full force of soldiers behind you when you walk at night: You know there’s nothing you can’t do.
7. “I’m sorry.”
I don’t mean the insincere variety tossed out mid-argument meant only to shut you up. Im talking about the “I’m sorry” whose subtext is, “I understand where you’re coming from, I feel bad that I contributed to this situation, and I’m going to do my best to make sure it never happens again.” When it’s said that way, is there anything more loving?

The Royal Family share throwback photos as they mark the 63rd anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II's Coronation Day.

Today marks the 63rd anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II's Coronations. It was a wonderful day of pageantry and celebration (despite the heavy rain), but also a solemn religious ceremony which has remained essentially the same for over a thousand years, a statement from the spokesperson reads. During the ceremony, The Queen promised to:

WOOW! Federal Government scraps post-UTME.

The Federal Government Thursday scrapped the conduct of post Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME) for candidates seeking admission into higher institution.

The government explained that all tertiary institutions were at liberty to conduct screening for candidates seeking admission into any school.

Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, said this on Thursday in Abuja after declaring open the 2016 Combined Policy Meeting on Admissions to Universities, Polytechnics and other higher institutions in Nigeria.

Adamu, expressed confidence in the examination conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), adding that there was no need for other examination to be conducted by universities after JAMB.

He said: “As far as I am concerned the nation has confidence in what JAMB is doing. The universities should not be holding another examination and if the universities have any complain against JAMB let them bring it and then we address it.

“If JAMB is qualified enough to conduct tests and they have conducted test then there will be no need to conduct another test for students to gain admission.”

The Minister also asked the JAMB to stop extra charges on several categories of changes on admissions such as the change of course, change of school and others.

Meanwhile, the JAMB has pegged the cut – off mark for admission for 2016 at 180.

The 180 benchmark, applies to all universities and higher institutions in the country, including polytechnics, colleges of education, and others.

JAMB’s Registrar and Chief Executive Officer, Prof. Dibu Ojerinde, after a long debate with delegates from various institutions, told journalists that no institution would go below the 180 cut-off set by the board.

He said: “180 is given, no institution will go below 180 this year, And some universities can go above it, I know University of Ife will not go below 200 and University of Lagos will not go below 200 and also UI. All these ones stand but 180 as bench mark for others.

“This year we have more than enough candidates, we have over 1.5 million candidates so we will get enough candidates to take in all the schools if they are serious. Re-distribution is already ongoing, because it is embedded in the registration procedure.”

Photos: RRS nabs two brothers in possession of fake currency.

Operatives of Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of Lagos State Police Command, today, arrested two blood brothers allegedly in connection with the possession of 80 pieces of fake N1000. The suspects who are from the same parents, Ifeanyi Ihesiaba and Hope Ihesiaba, were apprehended on a tip-off from the owner of a business centre(name withheld) at Magodo/Isheri area of Lagos, where one of the suspects, Ifeanyi, went to buy a recharge card of N200 with a fake One Thousand Naira note.

According to the shop operator, “It was around 6:35 pm. I was inside my shop when I saw this young man came in to demand for Two hundred Naira of recharge card. I stood up immediately to attend to him. I demanded for the money before I could give him the recharge card he asked for. Suspiciously, I deeply looked at the money, and I discovered that it was a fake denomination of One thousand Naira…. Then, I pretended as if I was still looking for the recharge card and balance of N800 Naira, and I used the back door to go out. I looked around for the Police, and luckily for me, I saw RRS operatives who were on patrol routine around the axis. I explained to them, and they instantly followed me to my shop which led to his arrest.”

Upon his arrival at the RRS’ Headquarters in Alausa, the suspect made a confessional statement, saying that his brother, Hope Ihesiaba, who just arrived to Lagos from South-Eastern part of the Country, gave him the money. “I will not deny the fact that the monies are fake. But I thought I could spend them around the area. I have made a greatest mistake of my life”, he noted.
However, his confessional statement helped the Police to track his brother to brothel where he was arrested after hidden for two days. While interrogating his brother, he said that he never knew it was a criminal offence to be in possession of fake currency.
"When I noticed that my brother has been apprehended where he went to spend the money, I had to take to my heels. I went to hide in a brothel around Berger area. But at a point, I realised that blood is thicker than water, and more so, my brother is innocent. So, when he pretended that he was released on bail, I decided to show face in order to apologise to him… I don't know he was deceiving me so that I can come out from my shell. I went back home after two days, unknowingly, Police had surrounded everywhere, and I got arrested".
Explaining how he got the fake currency, the suspect said “I bought the currency from one guy simply identified as Odi in Aba. I exchanged 80 pieces of fake one thousand naira for N28,000. There is a popular relaxation spot in Aba, called Boropit opposite Ariara Market. At this place, there are many people dealing with this fake currency."
The suspected criminal said that he relocated to Lagos last November after his laundry shop in Rumuola Road in Port-Harcourt was demolished by the State Government.
"When all I had laboured for in my life has been destroyed by the government, I had to relocate to Lagos to start a new life. At the moment, I am managing with my brother in his apartment. I was looking for capital to start -up my laundry business, but help was not forthcoming. Then, I decided to go to Aba to buy the fake currency, so I can be spending it here and collecting balances in each one thousand naira. I think by this means, I can begin new life".
He went further, “When I got back to Lagos with 80 pieces of fake one thousand naira, I shared it into two; I gave my brother 40 pieces and also took 40 pieces of fake currency. It was one of the fake money I gave my brother that he wanted to spend to buy to a recharge card where he was arrested."
The RRS operatives further made frantic efforts to recover all other fake currency in their possession, by searching their three-bedroom flat residence, at No 2B Oluwakemi Street, Ojodu-Abiodun, where another 77 pieces of fake one thousand were recovered. His girlfriend, Ndubuisi Ijeoma, and another suspect, Simeone Joseph, were also arrested.
In his words, Simeon Joseph, who denied having knowledge of the fake currency found on the suspect, said that he was only putting up with him pending the time he will get his own accommodation. “I am into music production and learning hair dressing from one Mrs. Orji who had recently travelled out of the country. I knew the suspect about ten years ago…. I am just trying may be I will be managing with him in his shop because he is also a hair-stylist. And since my boss had travelled out of the country, I wish I continue learning the work. This is why I decided to put up with him in his house in Ojodu. Apart from hair dressing work, I did not know that the suspect is dealing with fake currency.”
He continued: “I did not know anything about the one thousand naira denomination found on him and subsequent search of his house where another fake currency was recovered. I know it is criminal offence to be in possession or spend of fake currency.
One of the suspect’s girlfriends, Ndubuisi Ijeoma, confessed that all the fake currency found in her wardrobe all belonged to his boyfriend, Ifeanyi Ihesiaba.
“The Policemen conducted a search in my room and they found two laptops, DSTV Walka, and my phones. The laptops belonged to my boyfriend and his friend. The fake currency found under my clothes was kept there by the suspect, which I knew nothing about. I don’t know anything about the fake currency, but was recovered under my clothes in my room,” Ijeoma added.
Other items recovered from the suspects are two laptops, a cutlass, sledge hammer and a sum of Seventeen Thousand Naira.
Confirming the arrest, the state Police' Spokesperson, Superintendent of Police, SP Dolapo Badmus, implored people to critically look at any currency denomination exchanging with them for business transaction. The suspects have been transferred to State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for prosecution.

A seven-year-old boy is missing in a forest after his parents made him get out of the car as punishment, police in Japan have said.
More than 150 police and rescue workers have been searching for Yamato Tanooka in a wooded area on Mount Komagatake in Nanae, Hokkaido, the northern-most of Japan's four main islands, since he disappeared on Saturday.
Yamato's parents initially told police that their son had disappeared while they were picking wild vegetables in the area, which is said to be populated by brown bears.
However, they later admitted they had made him get out of the car to punish him for throwing rocks while playing at a river earlier in the day.
"The parents left the boy in the mountains as a punishment," a police spokesman said.
"They said they went back to the site immediately but the boy was no longer there."
Yamato's father told a journalist from Asahi TV that he had been too afraid to tell the truth when he contacted police to launch the search.
As yet, it is unclear if the parents will face charges.

Christ Embassy in Over N2.1bn Scandal.

Auditors appointed by the United Kingdom’s Charity Commission to review the accounts of the UK branch of the popular Christ Embassy, have raised eyebrows over suspicious payments worth N2.14 billion (£4.28 million) made to companies and organisation closely related to the church in 2013.

UK authorities have previously raised concerns over controversial expenditures made by the church.

On 11 August 2014, the Charity Commission, which is the regulator of charities in England and Wales, side-lined the church’s board of trustees and appointed an interim manager, Rod Weston of the international audit and accounting firm, Mazars, to take over the management of the church.

The decision to suspend the church’s board of trustees follows the discovery of controversial payments worth N1.8 billion (£3.6 million) to overseas entities between 2008 and 2012.

At the time, the Charity Commission, issued a statement that it had opened a statutory inquiry to investigate Christ Embassy over “a number of serious concerns relating to the use of charitable funds, in particular large connected party payments and the potential misapplication of grant funding”.

The commission said it was not convinced that the church had been prudent in managing its finances.

Subsequently, the UK tax authority, HM Revenue and Customs, withheld N711.4 million (£ 2.7 million) due to the church in donation between 2008 and 2012 until the conclusion is resolved.

But details of the 2013 financial statement, which was approved on 22 January, 2016 and released recently, show that the church aggravated payments similar to those the Charity Commission had flagged as suspicious.

According to Jacob Cavenagh and Skeet, the independent auditors, the church made a total income of £14.1 million in 2013 but had an expenditure of £15.9 million. Part of the expenditure was made to companies and organisations with close relation to the church.

Family watch teenage son make love to wife for the first time.

Singaporean social media has been captivated by an unusual story concerning a family living in Woodlands New Town.

A photo was posted by a member of the family earlier this week, and it has since gone viral, receiving thousands of comments from members of the public. The image depicts an unexpected scene: a male and a female lie in bed, in the middle of intercourse, while members of their family watch on.

The intimate moment was captured by the man’s uncle, who revealed it was a family tradition that has been passed down through generations.

“While most people may consider it odd, for our family there is nothing more proud than celebrating a son, brother or nephew having sex for the first time,” wrote the uncle, in a post accompanying the explicit photo.

“We see it as the last step on the long journey to adulthood, and it’s also a special chance to witness the moment that a new life is formed.”

The uncle explained that he’d also had his family present to witness his first intercourse.

“I felt less nervous having my family there to accompany me, and also give me guidance on how to proceed. At first, I had trouble entering my girlfriend, but my mother suggested I take things more slowly and relax, and I was able to eventually slip it in.”

The photograph also captures the man’s mother and sister, who were sitting on the edge of the bed to provide tips and encouragement. “I snapped the photo right at the moment before he came, and it was truly a beautiful scene.”

Feedback on social media has been divided over the family’s unusual tradition, with some Singaporean netizens labelling it as unnatural and obscene. “It’s quite disgusting that such a private act must be witnessed by the man’s who family,” wrote one commenter.

“Sex is something that should be behind closed doors, without your parents and siblings observing.”

Meanwhile, some users did have more positive thoughts on the practice. “I think it’s actually quite charming that the family supports their children so much during a pivotal moment in their development. It can’t hurt to have some extra advice when things are hard.”

In other Singapore-related news, a female customer at a Woodlands cafe has been horrified to learn that the male barista who prepared her drink ejaculated into her coffee.

Tottenham to play Champions League matches at Wembley next season.

Tottenham have reached a deal to play their Champions League home games at Wembley next season.

The Premier League club also has the option to play all home league and cup matches, as well as any European games, at the national stadium during the 2017-18 campaign.

Spurs are having a new £400m stadium built next to their existing White Hart Lane ground.

The development is due to be completed in time for the 2018-19 season.

"Our season ticket waiting list is over 50,000 so this now also offers us a great opportunity to provide more of our supporters with a chance to see the team play live during our Champions League campaign," said chairman Daniel Levy.

"Importantly, as we know it was our fans' preference, it means that we can play our home matches in London during our season away."

Tottenham's third-place finish in the Premier League qualified them for the group stages of next season's Champions League, which means they will play at least three home matches in the competition.

Their north-London rivals Arsenal hosted Champions League games at Wembley in 1998-99 and 1999-2000.

Football Association chief executive Martin Glenn welcomed Spurs' move, saying: "The increased revenue will help us meet our targets for improving coaching and grassroots facilities and growing participation."

BREAKING NEWS! / SHOCKING!!! ,{EFCC} Economic And Financial Crime Commission of Nigeria recovers N900M from former Nigerian president Jonathan’s kinsman, could he be fraudulent ??

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has recovered N900m from Mr. Waripamowei Dudafa, a former Special Assistant on Domestic Affairs to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan.

A reliable source at the EFCC told our correspondent on Sunday that the money was found in one of Dudafa’s accounts, which was immediately frozen.

The source said, “Dudafa told us that he had no money; so, we began to investigate his accounts. We then found N900m that was hidden in one of his accounts through the connivance of his account officer.

“Dudafa initially denied owning the account but when he was confronted with evidence, he had no choice but to admit. Some people, who had paid money into the account based on Dudafa’s instructions, even came forward to say that the account indeed belonged to Dudafa. The N900m will be used as evidence against him in court.”

Dudafa, who was a close aide to and a kinsman of Jonathan, was arrested on April 18 at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.

The former presidential aide, alongside Jonathan’s ex Aide-de-Camp, Col. Ojogbane Adegbe, was accused of giving N10bn to delegates at the presidential primary of the Peoples Democratic Party in December 2014, in which Jonathan was the only candidate.

The money was allegedly diverted by the Office of the National Security Adviser from a Signature Bonus Account in the Central Bank of Nigeria.

The N10bn is believed to have been diverted from oil receipts as follows: $5m (November 14, 2014); $47m (November 27, 2014); €4m (December 3, 2014) and €1.6m (December 24, 2014).

While Adegbe was arrested but later released, Dudafa was said to have fled to either Dubai or a Caribbean country where he stayed for several months.

However, impeccable sources at the EFCC told our correspondent that Dudafa was arrested by operatives of the Department of State Services upon arrival at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.

In his Statement of Witness/Accused Person, which had been filed at the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, embattled former NSA, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd.), had said the N10bn was given to Ojogbane and Dudafa.

Dasuki had said, “That I am aware in November, I cannot remember the exact date, my office requested the CBN to exchange N10bn from the account of the Office of the National Security Adviser domiciled in CBN. The money was exchanged and $47m and some Euros, which I cannot remember the exact amount, were delivered at my residence.

“The money was for delegates that attended the nomination convention for the PDP presidential nomination. The money was paid and sent to Hon. Dudafa (SSAP, Household) and ADC(C-I-C) for distribution on the instruction of the President.”

Desmond Tutu's daughter loses South African church licence after her gay marriage.

Desmond Tutu's daughter, Reverend Canon Mpho Tutu-van Furth has been forced to give up her duties as a priest in South Africa's Anglican church after she married a woman, she told AFP today

Mpho can no longer preside at holy communion, weddings, baptisms or funerals after handing in her licence because the church does not recognise gay marriage. She said her father, the retired archbishop and celebrated anti-apartheid campaigner, was "sad but not surprised" at the news.

"The canon (law) of the South African Church states that marriage is between one man and one woman," Tutu-van Furth said in an email. "After my marriage... the Bishop of Saldanha Bay was advised that he must revoke my licence. I offered to return my licence rather than require that he take it from me."

Mpho and Marceline Tutu-van Furth have been on honeymoon on the Indonesian island of Bali after holding a wedding party outside Cape Town earlier this month.
Desmond Tutu, 84, who has been in frail health, attended the celebrations with his wife. He has previously spoken out in favour of gay marriage.

Marceline Tutu-van Furth is an Amsterdam-based professor specialising in paediatric infections. The couple -- who are both divorced and have children -- officially tied the knot in the Netherlands in December.

"My wife and I meet across almost every dimension of difference. Some of our differences are obvious; she is tall and white, I am black and vertically challenged," Mpho told the South African City Press newspaper. "Ironically, coming from a past where difference was the instrument of division, it is our sameness that is now the cause of distress," she said in a reference to apartheid.

Senior local priest Bruce Jenneker told AFP that the Saldanha diocese had received Mpho's licence with "sadness".

"It was a great pity that it had to happen," he added.

Petition to EFCC against Jonathan a hoax – Metuh’s Counsel.

Counsel to Chief Olisa Metuh, the embattled former National Publicity Secretary of the People’s Democractic Party, PDP, Barr. Ben Nwosu, has described as a hoax, a recent petition to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, for the anti-graft agency to invite and probe ex-President Goodluck Jonathan on issues relating to the ongoing trial of Metuh.

The petition was sent to the EFCC by Barr. Osuagwu Ugochukwu, on behalf of a former member of the Enugu State House of Assembly, Ikenna Ejezie.

Nwosu in a statement on Saturday, said: “Our attention has been drawn to reports in the media regarding a petition by one Barrister Osuagwu Ugochukwu claiming to be representing a non- existent former member of the Enugu State House of Assembly, given as Ikenna Ejezie, and asking the EFCC to invite and interrogate ex-President Goodluck Jonathan on issues relating to the on-going trial of our client, Chief Olisa Metuh.

“Whereas we note that Barrister Ugochukwu has links with the EFCC and had appeared on behalf of the commission while representing its former Chairman, Ibrahim Larmode at a hearing in the National Assembly last year, the claim that the petition is on behalf of a former member of Enugu State House of Assembly is false as no such individual ever served in that legislative house.

“However, we have thoroughly studied the petition and for the avoidance of doubt, wish to state as follows.

1. The petition is not really against ex-President Jonathan but actually a calculated attempt targeted at swaying public sentiments and the judiciary against our client in this orchestrated and well-funded media trial. The idea is to sway the minds of the public and the court to get a conviction based more on media trial than the laws of the land.

2. It is clear that their assertion is neither based on the statement our client made at the EFCC nor on the evidence placed before the court, which has clearly established our client’s case that the N400 million approved by the former president was not for personal and private use.

3. The fact that this matter is subjudice should have impressed upon the petitioners and their backers that publicizing such hoax is actually an affront to the judiciary except it is intended to cow the judiciary.
4. We are astonished as to how the petitioners would have referred to our client’s statement as a confession and a criminal statement.

5. We are also not unmindful of the fact that this appears to be a vendetta by some persons to cast our client in the mold of an already guilty individual just waiting for sentencing.

6.It is therefore obvious that the sole intention of this petition is to distort our client’s defense, which has so far been honestly and sincerely presented before the court

7. Finally, we state that we support the present fight against corruption and which is needed at this time of our national development, however this should not be used by some persons as a ploy to settle personal scores,” the statement added.

How Nigerian Petrol Attendants Cheat You In Filling Stations - Daramola Babalola.

By Daramola Babalola,

The rise in the price of petrol from ₦86.50/L to ₦145 Naira/L last week has continued to have a heavy toll on Nigerians, while many are taking to the street to protest the fuel hike, others are getting used to the excruciating fact that a litre of petrol now costs ₦145 Naira.

Sadly, as if the skyrocketing price of petrol isn’t enough, the ‘friendly’ fuel station attendants have found numerous tricks to add to their regular income, and undercut the customers who at the first place are paying through their noses.

The nefarious activity perpetrated by petrol attendants nationwide has gone unnoticed by many motorists as they drive into the filling stations to fill their tanks.

Fuel Station scams are not something new. There are plenty of foul plays which can leave you cheated at a fuel station.

Why do the petrol attendants cheat you?

First of all, the petrol attendants in Nigeria are one of the least paid in the country, infact an average petrol attendant is  paid between ₦10,000 - ₦15,000 monthly, but a smart attendant can make his salary in one day by cheating customers.

Ideally, when a petrol attendant resumes for work, he/she takes the reading on the meter on the fuel dispenser, which they call The Opening Meter, and after they close for the day,  the reading on the meter, called The Closing Meter is taken by the attendant. Then, they multiply the difference in the readings by the cost per litre, which is the amount they deliver to the manager. If there is any surplus cash, the attendant takes it.

Unfortunately, the surplus money is simply a product of manipulation/cheating of petrol buyers by the fuel attendants on a daily basis.

How Nigerian Petrol Attendants Cheat Customers In Filling Stations

I have compiled a list of some of the most common dirty tactics which are used to cheat customers at Nigerian fuel stations based on my research and conversation with some petrol attendants across the country.

  • TRICK 1: Recall or TIM/CAL button

On the fuel dispenser there is usually a button labelled ‘Recall, TIM/CAL’ or any other label, depending on the machine. The essence of the button is to enable the attendant to see the past sales.
If you want to see your last ten sales, you just press Recall, then the number you want to see etc, depending on the number you want, and it shows you the amount.

Beyond seeing  past sales, petrol attendants use it to cheat and make money from the customers.

For example, if a petrol attendant sold ₦5,000 worth of fuel to (Customer A), and the next customer (Customer B) also wants to buy ₦5,000., the attendant will clear the screen to ₦00.0 and tell Customer B to look at it (A way of gaining your trust and making you relax) then when they observe that the second customer (Customer B) Isn’t paying attention, they will sell some quantity, like ₦3,500 for example and press Stop or Cancel, depending on the machine, then press Recall 1, and Ok,With that, ₦5,000 will appear on the screen and that is what the customer will see on the meter, believing the sale is complete, meanwhile the attendant recalled the previous sale.
My investigations revealed that this can be done in less than one second.

Infact, some attendants could go to the extent of writing out some past sales on a paper where they can easily have a glance to know which number to recall when a customer is distracted or looks away, since many people prefer to buy based on price and not litre.
For example Recall 1 can be ₦5,000, Recall 2₦3,000, Recall 3 - ₦2,000, so based on the customer they want to cheat, they look at the paper to recall, and the customers would think the machine was fast, so they wouldn’t always suspect anything

  • TRICK 2: Fake hang the nozzle
Almost every petrol consumer is knowledgeable that when the nozzle is hanged on the pump, the readings revert to zero. Thus the fuel attendants have also found a way to manipulate it to make some money for their pockets.

What they do is that they gently hang the nozzle, such that it won’t click to rub off the old sales and revert to zero, so,they fake hang the nozzle, while the dispenser is still running, so if a new customer comes, they simply continue from where they stopped from the previous customer.

This trick is used a lot during fuel scarcity, or when customers are in a hurry to buy fuel.

This trick is also easier for the fuel attendant if  the last sale was in a small quantity.

  • TRICK 3: The Okada/Keke Napep advantage
Most times, the Okada and Keke Napep's tend to buy petrol in small quantities, for example like 2 or 3 Litres of fuel.

After dispensing fuel for the Okada/Keke Napep, if the next buyer intends to buy fuel in his car or a big jerry can, the fuel attendant will use the Okada/Keke Napep advantage, because of the small quantity sold previously and continue to dispense fuel into your car tank without clearing the previous sale.

For example, if the previous sale to an Okada, Keke Napep or even a commercial bus is about ₦350, the fuel attendant will gently place the nozzle, and naturally, when the next customer (The Car owner) sees that the attendant removed the nozzle from the dispensing machine, he believes that it started from zero. However, it is not always the case, thus the car owner is automatically cheated by ₦350.

  • TRICK 4: The Fill up your tank system
A report culled from dailyfinance.com says filling up the tank may be another way to lose money and fuel, because when the pump clicks off automatically, no additional fuel enters the tank. “Instead, fuel is likely being diverted through the pump’s vapour recovery system and back into the station’s tank, which means you are paying for petrol that you are not getting.

“More importantly, the car needs space in its tank for fuel vapours to expand. Overfilling can force gas into the car’s carbon filter, leading to poor performance, reduced mileage or costly repairs. So, the next time you want to buy fuel, don’t top off your tank, it’s good for your car and even better for your wallet,” the report said.

  • TRICK 5: The faulty meter
Some petrol pumps have rigged meters that start ticking even before petrol starts to flow from the hose. Have you ever gone to a filling station to buy fuel and it takes lesser time to fill your tank, compared to other places? This is as a result of the meters that have been tampered with, the attendant will make you believe the particular fuel dispenser is faster or slower than normal, depending on how the meters were manipulated.

Nigeria’s petroleum regulator, Department of Petroleum Resources, DPR,saddled with the responsibility of regulating, monitoring and enforcing the laws in the sector, used the Seraphin Can to expose filling stations involved in the nefarious act in Lagos recently.

The ten-liter Seraphin Can is used by the DPR to ascertain the exact dispensing meter measurement of filling stations. When filled to the level of ten liters, dispensing meters that have been adjusted will show above ten liters on the display board. When this occurs, the filling station is shut by DPR officials.

DPR said over 500 filling stations had been shut for under-dispensing and other related offences.

  • TRICK 6:  Using Unnecessarily Longer Dispenser Pipe
Pumps save on a lot of petrol when they use long pipes.

A perfectly good meter will show that a certain amount of petrol has been pumped out, but that amount hasn't reached your tank -- some of it is still in the pipe, and it goes back into the pump. Through the day, the number of litres that stations save can be enormous, making the attendant accumulate surplus cash from undispensed fuel.

  • TRICK 7: Get friendly, distract and cheat
How many times have you visited the filling station and you notice that the fuel attendant is trying to chat you up. If he is not talking about the government, religion or politics, he is most likely to dive into football, especially if he noticed you are a fan of a particular club.
'Oga mi up Arsenal o, me i be Barcelona fan, we go beat Arsenal all the time'
The trick is to make you get very comfortable, argue with him and take your eyes off the fuel meter.
Sometimes the attendant can even get his colleague to distract you, so he can focus on fuel pump to cheat you.

He can ask you questions like..
'Sir/madam do you need engine oil' or 'Sir you need to balance your wheels'

  • TRICK 8: Pretend not to hear you, fake ignorance, smile, apologize
This is another trick used by fuel attendants, when you request to fill up your car or
jerrycan for a particular amount, for example ₦4000, the attendant will sell only ₦1000 worth of fuel, when you ask him why he didn't fill up for ₦4000, the attendant will apologize and smile innocently and say that he/she heard you say you wanted to buy ₦1000 worth of fuel, and thus pretend to continue filling the remaining ₦3000, by pretending to reset the meter and fill up your ₦4000 worth of petrol and so you pay ₦4000

But the attendant just cheated you, and this is how...

He did not reset the meter to ₦0.00 , he continued from the ₦1000 point till he got to ₦3000, so in reality you only get the petrol worth ₦3000, but pay ₦4000

  • TRICK 9: Intervening the Dispenser Nozzle
It is generally found that the pump attendants keep their fingers tight on the nozzle and interrupt the flow of fuel manually. In this way, the required amount of fuel gets short. With these type of tricks, the pump staff saves probably litres of oil in a single day that accumulates to his personal surplus profit for the day.

  • TRICK 10: Fuel Adulteration
The simplest and the most effective way of cheating used by almost all the petrol pumps is the adulteration of fuel. Usually, the dealers chemically adulterate the petrol by adding Naphtha, which is a byproduct and is as dense as petrol. It does not leave residue and is cheaper than its counterpart.

  • TRICK 11: Two sides of price indicators
In this particular trick, manipulations are done by pump attendants who normally strike when motorists are preoccupied with other thoughts. Most times, pump attendants are so daring.

Motorists should be more careful with pumps that have two sides of price indicators—back and forth screen, displaying amount of money dispensed.

For several reasons, some of which are technical, each side of the screen could show a different price. For example, ₦5000 and the other screen could display about ₦4000.

If you requested to buy fuel worth ₦5000 and the a buyer from other side of the pump is also buying ₦5000 worth of fuel, if you are not watching close enough, a crafty attendant can dispense fuel worth ₦4000 and point to the other side pump,  hoodwinking you into believing that he/she has dispensed the amount you required, meanwhile you have lost ₦1000 as the price indicator was for the other pump.

Now to counter these 11 tricks above, here are some of the counter-tricks or precautions to cut the cheating attendants

  • Always, get off from your car, lock the vehicle and stand close to petrol tank and see the meter readings when buying fuel
  • Check the meter reading after opening the petrol tank or before fueling starts and again at the very end.
  • Keep a continuous watch at the meter reading and at the fueling person, throughout your turn.
  • If you develop doubt over a particular petrol pump, then AVOID that particular petrol pump in the future like the plague. I have also seen that there are petrol pumps which do not indulge in such activities. Identify such pumps and try to fill from these pumps only
  • In any case, don’t believe the attendants and NEVER EVER TAKE YOUR EYES FROM THE METER. Get it set to zero and do not take your eyes off till the last drop comes out of the nozzle
  • Ask the attendant firmly to keep his hands off the nozzle and wait for the auto cut-off to kick-in.
  • Park the car a bit away from the machine and let the attendant stretch the pipe to your fuel lid. Ask him to hold the nozzle at certain height post he is done fueling up the tank in order to allow the residual to flow in
  • Always check for zero before they start filling, even if the petrol pump is overcrowded.
  • Reduce conversations with the fuel attaendant, and if you must talk to him/her, please do it without taking your eyes off the meter for one second. Also make sure the meter is set at ₦0.00  before the attendants starts to fill up your tank/keg.
  •  Do not take your eyes off the meter till the last drop, don't get distracted by counting the money you want to give him/her, wait till he/she is done dispensing the fuel.
  • End the transaction right there, in case the meter is stopped for any reason.
  • Do not hurry and always pay at the end of the transaction.
  • Ask for a printed receipt every time, as far as possible.
  • Always keep a watch on the attendant and on the meter. If you are suspicious about a certain fuel station, step out of your car and ask the attendant to move away from the dispenser while filling. If you still feel that he is cheating stop him from filling your tank and call the manager and lodge your complain. If nobody at the station admits their fraud or deny any assistance, reach out to DPR https://dpr.gov.ng/index/contact-us/

As we visit the filling station today, always remember The Golden Rule: Never take your eyes off the meter

Have you must also have experienced similar attempts to cheat. Do you have any special experience to share?

Lagos 4th mainland bridge will be ready by 2019 - Ambode.

Lagos State Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding to begin the construction of the 38km 4th Mainland Bridge, expected to bring a 14-year old dream to reality.

The MoU was signed on Wednesday at the Banquet Hall, Lagos House, Ikeja.

The construction is expected to cost N844billion in a Public Private Partnership initiative and would be delivered in three years.

The need for the bridge had become imperative following the phenomenal growth of the State with a population of over 21 million people, which has in turn increased commercial activities and traffic gridlock, the state Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode was quoted as saying in a press release signed by his chief press secretary, Habib Aruna.

“This has made it imperative for us to have a 4th Mainland Bridge that will serve as an alternative route to the Eastern axis and decongest traffic in the State,” he said.

“More importantly this bridge will provide the required transportation compliment to the rapidly growing industrial activities on the Eti-Osa – Lekki – Epe corridor of the State.”

He said the proposed alignment of the Bridge will pass through Lekki, Langbasa and Baiyeiku towns along the shoreline of the Lagos Lagoon estuaries, further running through Igbogbo River Basin and crossing the Lagos Lagoon estuaries to Itamaga Area in Ikorodu.

The Governor said the alignment will also cross through the Itoikin road and the Ikorodu – Sagamu Road to connect Isawo inward Lagos Ibadan Expressway at Ojodu Berger axis.

He said the Bridge would be made up of eight interchanges to facilitate effective interconnectivity between different parts of the State.

“This structure will be a Four-lane dual carriageway with each comprising three lanes and two metres hard shoulder on each side. The bridge will be constructed to have a generous median to allow for both future carriageway expansion and light rail facility. There is no gainsaying the fact that huge benefits will be derived from this project but most importantly, make life more comfortable for Lagosians,” he said.
Expressing confidence that the project would be delivered on a win-win framework for all investors, the Governor said for the first time in the history of the State, the Government was embarking on the construction of a long-span bridge and expressway without Federal funding as the project is to be solely funded by the private sector.

The Bridge, among others would accommodate cyclists and pedestrians and feature two service areas as well as additional pedestrian crossing, Aruna indicated in the press release.

“The Bridge would also accommodate three Toll Plazas which are still being tested from financial point of view and it would serve as a major boost to the actualisation of the Lekki Master Plan,” he said.

The project is to be financed by Africa Finance Corporation, Access Bank and other private investors who have already signified intention to be part of the construction, while Visible Assets Limited would be the coordinating firm, Aruna revealed.
